Fathers Day Biscuits… with a little history!

Father’s Day is celebrated around the world as an opportunity to recognise fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers and other important father figures. Although honouring fathers has ancient roots, the modern celebration began in the United States during the early twentieth century.

One of the earliest organised Father’s Day events took place in West Virginia in 1908. It was held to remember more than 360 men who had died in a mining disaster the previous year, many of whom were fathers. However, the event did not immediately become an annual tradition.

The person most closely associated with the creation of Father’s Day is Sonora Smart Dodd from Washington State. Inspired by the growing popularity of Mother’s Day, she wanted to create a similar occasion to honour fathers. Sonora had been raised by her father, William Jackson Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who cared for six children.

The first official Father’s Day celebration organised by Sonora took place in Spokane, Washington, on 19 June 1910. The idea gradually gained support across America, although it took several decades to receive national recognition. In 1972, President Richard Nixon officially established Father’s Day as a national holiday in the United States, to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June.

The tradition later spread to many other countries, including the United Kingdom, where Father’s Day is also observed on the third Sunday in June. Other countries celebrate it on different dates, often linked to religious or cultural traditions.

Today, Father’s Day is marked with cards, gifts, family meals and thoughtful gestures. While the celebrations have become increasingly commercial, the meaning remains simple: taking time to thank the fathers and father figures who provide love, guidance, support and encouragement throughout our lives.
